Racer X / Predator Update

E-mail Print PDF
Thanks for following along with the Racer X/ Predator project. It was really fun to take a concept from the design stage, build it and race a very different looking A class cat against some of the proven designs.

Predator goes to Virginia Beach

E-mail Print PDF

Notes from Racer X

Competitor recap:  Ron Roth continues to improve in his ASG3. Bob Orr is sailing very well. Kevin Baum is fast upwind and starting to work out how to sail downwind better (yikes). Tracy Oliver is always good and mostly sets the pace downwind. Tracy waves good by to his Egner Flyer and moves onto a new boat for the next regatta (double yikes). Dan Berger put together some good finishes. Chris Brown had stiffened his applied composites mast to current spec’s supplied by Ben Hall (Chris was super happy with the results).

Chris was all powered up and could more easily fly a hull when going wild. Chris Ford is still getting to know his Flyer, and while leading a race had a gear failure which cramped his style.  Spencer Greer is one of the newer members of the Virginia Beach fleet and enjoyed finishing all but one race. Joe Sparks again made the lengthy drive from Tennessee, thanks again Joe that drive must be getting old.

Applying Non Skid

E-mail Print PDF

Applying Non SkidNon skid is such an easy thing to do, but there are some tips to make it look really nice. First mask off the area where the nonskid will be applied. Lightly sand that area with 220 grit paper, be sure to get right into the edge of the masking tape. I use a small trim roller to apply the paint, it is best to use a very short nap 1/8” fiber roller rather than foam otherwise the nonskid particles will destroy the roller. Again I used Awlgrip paint with no reducer so I could applied a nice even thick coat of paint, no runs. This paint surface is the most import thing in getting a nice even grip surface, take your time make it even. Directly after the paint has been rolled drop the Awlgrip particles ( coarse griptex ) into the paint. Best to be generous when applying the griptex, the paint will pick up all that it needs for an even coating. Horizontal surfaces are easily coated, Use a flour sifter for a nice even coat. Vertical surfaces are harder, I took a hand full of griptex and blew it onto the wet paint surface. I used a baking tray to catch all the particles that fall off so they can be reused.

Let paint sit for 24 hours.

Rudder Heads

E-mail Print PDF

Rudder head fabrication. Not the most fun project and honestly I was reluctant to take on the job.

rudder head moldRudder head mold: I used a product called Starboard. It is a sheet of vinyl board that is easily worked, tough, and requires no finishing as resin releases off the surface quite easy. Although I did PVA the surface just to the sure. The rudder heads are a copy of the A2 style as a single piece assembly with a stiffing flange around the perimeter. The mold was screwed together to create the flanges which also makes it easy to break the mold apart to release the finished piece. Good news is the first piece came off the mold with little problems and the mold is undamaged and ready to use again.

Paint is Great

E-mail Print PDF

Not a lot has happened since the last update except for a lot of sanding and preparation.

All the hard work is slowly paying off. Preparation is 100% of a good job. The boat looks fantastic.

I primed the deck with Awlgrip 545 and mixed white and a grey base color together to get a light gray color.

The finished boat will look much like the hulls do now but with a gloss coat of medium gray and whisper gray on the deck.

5 weeks to Sail!

E-mail Print PDF

With only five weeks to go until the Admirals cup in Bokeelia Florida I still have a bunch of work to do, So I really need to get cracking.

Spot fill: After fairing the boat and small low area’s need to the spot filled. I use 3M glazing compound. It’s just like paint primer in a tube. Apply it with a squeegee.

Beams & Sockets

E-mail Print PDF

platformPlatform: The two hulls have been aligned on a simple jig using a 2”x 6” board at each end. Section shapes cut from ½” plywood and then attached to the boards to create the right hull cant. Predator has 6 degree of cant. The section shapes are then placed at the same interval along each hull to ensure the hulls are in the proper plane as the jig is leveled and squared up. When this is done setting the beams is the next order of business.

Predator Spawns

E-mail Print PDF

Hull number two has just be faired and primed.

carbonCarbon: After the out carbon skin was applied the surface was scuffed with 60 grit paper just to remove the gloss of the resin and sharp fibers. Next stage was to file the carbon weave with a light weight filler. I used a neat product called Quick Fair made by system three. This is a two part filler with a premixed consistence for non sagging fairing jobs. Just mix the right portion of A and B and the filler is ready to use. The filler was applied using a squeegee with a good amount of down force to only apply just enough filler to make the weave covered just above flush.
