Curved Blades at NAC

No doubt that many of you are reading with interest on blogs and the internet about the emergence of the curved daggerboards at the recent European championship. Specifically the reports are that top German sailor Bob Baier was quicker than most around the race course on a new Nils Bunkenberg designed Nikita with curved daggerboards that met the requirements of the current daggerboard extension and retraction limitations that were put into effect in April 2006. These limitations do not specifically limit curved blades.

One of the big problems with this rule is the definition of what is a hydrofoil. There are some who want to define a hydrofoil as a foil capable of lifting the boat (think Moth). But don’t our current daggerboards also meet that definition since they are in water and producing lift? Hence one debatable issue that the IACA technical committee could not solve. About the only objective rule they could define was they did not want any foil system that could physically lift the boat clear of the water (again think Moth and the image of the 2007 Canadian C-Class catamaran with lifting foils).
