First Annual A-Class Catamaran Jersey Shore Regatta

E-mail Print PDF

Jersey Shore RegattaLavallette Yacht Club

It was a hot and windy day for the first annual A-Class Catamaran Jersey Shore Regatta, which was held at Lavallette Yacht Club on on Saturday, July 24th. Eight sailors from Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club made the trip 'down the shore' to sail in Barnegat Bay, known for its wind and open waters. Sailors started off their day with a made-to-order hot breakfast at the yacht club. Not only did they get to eat in air conditioned comfort, but they had the unusual opportunity to have a generous meal at a modest price; no meal cost more than $3.00. Peter Block was so busy enjoying his giant cheese omelet (he was in omelet heaven) that Angela Burdette had to come to his rescue with napkins in hand to wipe his chin.

As the horn signaled the start of the first race, the sailors fastened their trapeze harnesses, sheeted in their sails, and began to steer their boats to windward in preparation for a typical catamaran race on Lake Hopatcong. However, this was not a typical catamaran race. This past Saturday, June 19th, 18 A-Class Catamarans, with balloons flying from their sails, had jammed the starting area to race in the "Doc Stern Regatta," celebrating and honoring fellow sailor Merrill "Doc" Stern's 90th birthday.

August 29-30, 2009

Bristol Yacht Club

Despite the threat of Tropical Depression Danny spoiling the weekend, 8 A-class sailors braved the rainy and unstable conditions August 29-30 in Bristol RI. The unusually small fleet was largely due to the threatening weather forecast, a late regatta, and roughly ½ the local fleet unable to attend with other commitments. Defending champ Lars Guck was a casualty of the latter which meant the title was up for grabs.
